Sophie Whittaker shared a terrifying secret. Hours later, she was dead.
Detective Kay Hunter and her colleagues are shocked by the vicious murder of a teenage girl at a private party in the Kentish countryside.
A tangled web of dark secrets is exposed as twisted motives point to a history of greed and corruption within the tight-knit community.
Confronted by a growing number of suspects and her own enemies who are waging a vendetta against her, Kay makes a shocking discovery that will make her question her trust in everyone she knows.
Though this is book 3 in the series, this was my first Detective Kay Hunter book and, yes it can be read as a standalone.
The plot is complex and additive. The characters have flavour to them and wouldn’t mind killing someone if it helps their ultimate goal. On top of solving this case, our protagonist Detective Kay Hunter is also busy facing enemies from the past and with the discoveries she makes, it becomes hard for her to trust others. But she doesn’t let it affect her investigation and continues on even when it’s absolutely clear someone doesn’t want her to win. This makes Detective Kay Hunter three-dimensional and, as a reader, I was completely invested in her story. The pace is moderate to high resulting in the book to be read in one sitting. The writing is simple and beautiful, providing twists in each chapter and then continuing on in the alternate chapter, forcing readers to read on if they want answers. And the ending… that came out of nowhere. The killer is never revealed until the very end and that is the key ingredient to a crime novel, which I love. This book is a complete breeze and I am eager to see what happens next in Kay’s life.
Final Verdict –
